The spiritual vow underlying the formation of the Ayurveda Healing Arts Institute (part of the Medicine Buddha Healing Center) is to help us realize the original Buddha Nature, the God-Consciousness, the Tao of Nature. We wish to benefit others in a day-to-day way from understanding and application of the time-honored Asian healing principles of Qi - Yang - Yin, of Vata - Pitta - Kapha, of Prana - Tejas - Ojas, of Rajas - Sattva - Tamas, of Catabolism - Metabolism - Anabolism, of GOD (Generator - Operator - Destroyer –– also known as Brahma - Vishnu - Shiva respectively). We desire to propagate the understanding of the Asian spiritual principles of the Oneness of the Universal, the Earth, and the Human being, and to transmit the deepest meanings of classical Asian culture (Indo-Sino-Tibetan).

Because the United States of America was formed by uniting people from a variety of cultures into a multifaceted society, we have the opportunity to select and synthesize from among diverse cultural heritages and medical-philosophical-spiritual traditions, from the essence of time-tested wisdom. Such revered knowledge, when combined with modern developments, constitutes the major course of study of the Ayurveda Healing Arts Institute. Thus, the programs offered are a synthesis of medical, cultural, philosophical, spiritual, and religious wisdom of India, Nepal, Tibet and to some degree China as well. Hence we teach the Indo-Sino-Tibetan Healing Arts with a focus on Ayurveda since “Ayurveda hugs all aspects of life.”
<top>
Medical knowledge exists in order to relieve the sufferings of humanity and all living beings, whether physical, mental, or spiritual. While the Ayurveda Healing Arts Institute's principle purpose is to enable students to successfully practice the Indo-Tibetan Ayurvedic healing arts, it does not stop there. The programs we offer encourage the philosophy that through the healing of oneself one can understand how to heal others – this is the essence of the Bodhisattva[1] Vow in Buddhism. The emphasis is on cultivation of precepts (ethics and right living), right action based on a calm contented heart, compassion, intellect, wisdom, and the comprehension of human nature.
<top>
In the long river of cultural development of the Indian, Nepalese, Tibetan and Chinese civilizations, medical science stands out as a bright and shining pearl. It embodies the rich experience and discipline developed by more than 2.47 billion persons (India, Nepal, Tibet, and China), existing on a region of the planet 6.2 million square miles in area (the USA is only 3.5 million square miles in area), and represents more than five thousand years of every day "clinical trials", understanding and effort against disease and suffering. Placing this time-tested wisdom and knowledge in the context of the United States of America - the foremost leader in modern science and technology - enables us to continue moving forward towards a bright future. We can make happen this future by seeing the limits of both modern and age-old paradigms and concepts while integrating the best proven methods of both the old and the new.
Our aim is to realize, through the medium of study of the Indo-Sino-Tibetan healing arts, the worthy ideal of making a significant contribution to the betterment and spiritual, mental and physical body prosperity of humanity and all living beings.

The Ayurveda Healing Arts Institute and its parent, the Medicine Buddha Healing Center, teaches a path of physical and spiritual cultivation that involves benefiting, rescuing, and enlightening both oneself and all beings. The Bodhisattva Way is the foundation of the Great Vehicle (Mahayana) Buddhist teaching and bases itself on the Five Vast Vows:
1. Living beings are boundless, I vow to save them all.
2. Afflictions are endless, I vow to cut them all off.
3. Dharma-doors are infinite, I vow to study them all.
4. The Buddha Way is unsurpassed, I vow to realize it.
5.
I vow to be reborn by Lotus-bloom transformation in this very next life in
Amitabha
Buddha's
Land of Utmost Happiness
to study the
Bodhisattva Path, and to then return to this Saha Land to rescue
living beings more than Ganges River sands.
Om Namo Amitabha Buddha! Om Namo Bhaisajya Guru Buddha! Om Namo Avalokiteshvara Great Compassion Bodhisattva! Om Namo Ganesha! Om Jai Hanuman! We bow to and offer sincere thanks and dedication to our teachers, the Venerable Master Hsuan Hua, the Venerable Ayurvedic Sage Doctor Vasant Lad, B.A.M.S. and the Clown Bodhisattva Patch Adams, M.D. and the great Nobel Peace Prize-winning doctor Albert Schweitzer.
